270 million people likely affected "Lower-level members, identification may be difficult"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yu Je-hoon] The Trump administration in the United States strengthened visa issuance regulations for members of the Chinese Communist Party on the 2nd (local time), the New York Times (NYT) reported on the 3rd.
According to the U.S. Department of State, starting immediately from that day, under the new visa policy, the maximum travel visa (VISA) duration for Chinese Communist Party members and their immediate family members is limited to within one month. The number of entries allowed on a visitor visa to the U.S. is also reduced to one.
Previously, Chinese Communist Party members could obtain U.S. visitor visas valid for 10 years, just like ordinary Chinese citizens, so this regulation has been significantly tightened.
Under this guideline, when a Chinese national applies for a visa, the U.S. government will determine party membership through the application and interview process. This measure targets 92 million Chinese Communist Party members, and the U.S. government estimates that about 270 million people will be affected by this policy. However, the NYT predicted that it would be difficult to identify ordinary party members except for high-ranking officials.
The NYT stated, "China will be angered by this guideline targeting its leadership," and predicted, "The years-long trade and technology conflicts between the two countries will intensify."
