[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Seok-jin] A man in his 40s who threatened Assemblyman Hong Joon-pyo by swinging a golf club in front of his campaign vehicle while placing a PET bottle filled with soy sauce during the April 15 general election has been sentenced to a suspended prison term.
The Daegu District Court Criminal Division 11 (Presiding Judge Kim Sang-yoon) sentenced A (46), who was tried for violating the Public Official Election Act and other charges, to six months in prison with a two-year suspension on the 3rd.
The court also ordered A to perform 120 hours of community service and confiscated the golf club used in the crime.
The court stated, "It is necessary to strictly punish the infringement of the freedom of elections, a fundamental social legal interest of democratic politics."
However, the court added that it took into account A’s confession to the crime and the absence of prior similar offenses in sentencing.
A was prosecuted on charges of repeatedly cursing and swinging a golf club while placing a 1.5ℓ PET bottle filled with soy sauce on the ground about 5 meters in front of the campaign vehicle where Assemblyman Hong, running as an independent candidate in the Suseong-gu B district of Daegu, was giving a speech on April 13.
