[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute announced on the 3rd that it signed a technology investment contract on the 2nd to establish its 5th research institute company by investing technologies such as 'Composition and Material Manufacturing Method for Tissue Repair' to Ravie Co., Ltd.
Ravie, which is transitioning into a research institute company this time, is a startup founded to commercialize the technology developed by Senior Researcher Kim Dongho of the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. In September, it signed a startup agreement with the institute and moved into the Radiation Fusion Technology (RFT) Practical Research Building at the Advanced Radiation Research Institute in Jeongeup, Jeollabuk-do.
The composition for tissue repair, known as a 'medical filler,' is generally made of hyaluronic acid filler. The technology developed by the Atomic Energy Research Institute is a method of manufacturing a poly-gamma-glutamic acid filler by irradiating electron beams onto a composition made of polyglutamic acid salt.
Unlike conventional hyaluronic acid fillers, it is made by irradiating electron beams without using toxic chemical crosslinking agents. It is therefore safer, has excellent durability, and has lower manufacturing costs compared to competing products.
A research institute company is a company established within one of five special zones nationwide with the approval of the Minister of Science and ICT to directly commercialize technology by public research institutions. It is based on the 'Special Act on the Promotion of Research and Development Special Zones.'
According to the Atomic Energy Research Institute, the number of research institute companies that receive technology investment from government-funded research institutions and support private capital investment is increasing recently. The institute explained, "Starting with the success of Colmar BNH, the first domestic research institute company invested by the Atomic Energy Research Institute in 2006, the launch of research institute companies has been continuous."
Ravie is the fifth research institute company of the Atomic Energy Research Institute. The inventor who developed the technology commercializes it directly as a startup affiliated with the institute and converts it into a research institute company while simultaneously attracting cash investment, establishing a stable technology commercialization model.
It was established in a form linking the institute’s technology investment with cash investment from Korea Science and Technology Holdings. Korea Science and Technology Holdings is a joint technology holding company funded by capital pooled from 17 government-funded research institutions.
Park Wonseok, President of the Atomic Energy Research Institute, said, "We will generously support Ravie Co., Ltd. to become the second Colmar BNH."
