Multicultural? How About the Military... Dongmyeong University Department of Military Science Wins Excellence Award at Future Complex Security Conference

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] At the ‘Future Complex Security Academic Conference’ held at Daejeon University on November 19th for university and graduate students nationwide, Yoon Bo-young, a senior in the Department of Military Studies at Dongmyeong University (President Jeong Hong-seop), won the Excellence Award with the theme ‘The Current Status of Multiculturalism in the Korean Military and Acceptance Measures for Cultural Diversity.’

Also, Hong Eun-joo, a senior in the Department of Military Studies, received an award for her presentation on ‘A Study on Stress Relief Measures for Overseas Deployed Soldiers.’

Professor Jeong Dong, the advisor for this academic conference, said, “The Department of Military Studies applies a graduation certification system where all seniors must write a thesis and graduate after three rounds of review and presentation. To pass this process, it requires about a year of in-depth research and preparation.”

The ‘Busan Jikimi’ team, composed of six third-year students from the Department of Military Studies at this university, conducted an educational course involving field visits to the Busan Disaster Safety Situation Room and Chungmu Facilities as part of their living lab activities. This was to analyze ordinances related to crisis management in wartime and peacetime, including disaster response, safety management, and integrated defense councils in Busan and Nam-gu.

Living Lab advisor Professor Jeong Seong-kyo said, “This is a great opportunity for military studies students, who will be commissioned as officers in the future, to study the cooperation between local governments and the military in wartime and peacetime.”

The Department of Military Studies at Dongmyeong University, established in March 2014 as the only department in the Busan-Ulsan region with the aim of nurturing future security personnel, has all its graduates commissioned as officers in the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps.

Starting from the 2022 academic year, the department plans to open a graduate program at the National Defense Graduate School to develop into a leading university for regional defense and security research.

Professor Na Seung-hak, head of the Department of Military Studies at Dongmyeong University, said, “We are developing a curriculum based on Dongmyeong University’s four core competencies (Character and Service, Self-Development, Creative Convergence, Glocal) and the major capabilities of the Department of Military Studies to cultivate military experts required by the military and society.”
