[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Seo Young-seo] Sinan County, Jeollanam-do (County Governor Park Woo-ryang) announced on the 2nd that the first honorary road representing the 1004 Islands Sinan County has been established in Gimhae City, Gyeongsangnam-do, its sister city.
Gimhae City recently held the 'Road Name Address Committee' and, after conducting a public opinion gathering from the 12th to the 26th of last month, finalized the honorary road names as 'Sinancheonsa-daero' and 'Ha-ui-ro'.
The honorary roads designated by Gimhae City this time are 'Sinancheonsa-daero' for the section passing through Jinyeong-eup in Gimhae City, and 'Ha-ui-ro' for Bongha-ro, where the birthplace of the late former President Roh Moo-hyun is located. The road name plaques were installed on the 27th of last month.
In particular, an information board explaining the background and meaning of the honorary road name designation was also erected near the tourist information center in Bongha Village, the birthplace of the late former President Roh Moo-hyun.
Previously, the two local governments signed a sisterhood agreement in September last year based on their historical affinity as hometowns that produced former Presidents Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun, and their common membership in the International Slow City network.
On October 14th, Sinan County declared Ha-ui Island as an island of Gimhae City, installed a symbolic sculpture, held an unveiling ceremony, and designated it as an honorary administrative district.
In response, Gimhae City granted honorary road names to certain sections of roads within its jurisdiction as a gesture of reciprocation for the declaration of Ha-ui Island as Gimhae City's island.
Park Woo-ryang, Governor of Sinan County, said, "Through the designation of honorary roads bearing the unique proper nouns 'Sinan, Cheonsa, Ha-ui,' symbolizing the 1004 Islands in Bongha Village, the birthplace of the late former President Roh Moo-hyun, it has become an opportunity to reflect on the noble spirit of the two presidents while cooperating and coexisting together. I would like to express my gratitude to Gimhae City, hoping that the granting of honorary road names and honorary administrative districts, which embody the symbolism of the region between sister cities, will serve as a cornerstone for fostering a special friendly relationship."
Additionally, Sinan County has been receiving numerous inquiries from local governments nationwide through extensive promotion last month about granting honorary administrative districts via island declaration ceremonies to municipalities without islands.
Accordingly, Sinan County plans to promote sisterhood agreements and share islands with seven cities including Ulsan Jung-gu Office, Uijeongbu City in Gyeonggi-do, Yeongdong County in Chungbuk, and Yangpyeong County in Gyeonggi-do, and also plans to grant honorary administrative districts to already sisterhood-agreed cities such as Hanam City and Goyang City in Gyeonggi-do, and Gyeongsan City in Gyeongbuk Province.
