[Asia Economy Reporter Wondara] Ahn Cheol-soo, leader of the People’s Party, expressed his opinion that Minister of Justice Choo Mi-ae should resign, saying that "Choo Mi-ae has been cornered" following the court’s decision to reinstate Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol.
On the 1st, Ahn wrote on Facebook, "The Ministry of Justice’s Inspection Committee concluded that the disciplinary request, inspection process, and investigation referral against the Prosecutor General were all inappropriate," adding, "The Deputy Minister of Justice, who took responsibility for the disciplinary action against the Prosecutor General, felt a burden on his conscience and tendered his resignation. Minister Choo Mi-ae has been cornered."
He said, "Amid these events, I see a ray of hope. I see that justice and conscience are alive despite the oppression of power," emphasizing, "We must make good use of this opportunity to restore justice and set power right by joining forces."
He also stated, "Just as you cannot cover the sky with your palm, no matter how strong the power is, it cannot overcome justice and conscience," urging, "Minister Choo must now withdraw all illegal measures herself and leave the Ministry of Justice. President Moon Jae-in must immediately dismiss Minister Choo. That is the right path and the will of the people."
Meanwhile, Prosecutor General Yoon, upon the court’s decision on the same day, went to the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office and said, "I promise everyone that as a public official of the Republic of Korea, I will do my best to uphold the spirit of the Constitution and the rule of law." The Ministry of Justice accepted Yoon’s request to postpone the hearing and rescheduled the Prosecutor Disciplinary Committee to the 4th.
