[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] The Seoul Science Museum announced on the 1st that it will launch the 'Grow Up, Bio Up' science education campaign to provide various opportunities for children and adolescents to develop an interest in basic science and ultimately nurture future scientists in the field of life sciences.
To this end, the Seoul Science Museum and Amgen Korea LLC signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the 30th of last month to expand life science education opportunities and career exploration opportunities in the science field for domestic children and adolescents. According to the agreement, Amgen Korea will donate 40 million KRW annually for three years to the science museum, and the Seoul Science Museum will be responsible for planning and conducting basic science education programs. Talent donation activities such as career exploration camps involving Amgen Korea's professional scientific personnel are also planned.
Both parties decided to start online education by developing a non-face-to-face experiential science laboratory from 2021 as the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic currently restricts in-person camp operations. Each year, 5,000 students will be able to conduct basic science experiments such as molecular biology (DNA, PCR, sequencing) in the laboratory established online.
From 2022, the Grow Up, Bio Up camp will be operated, allowing participants to experience biological practice and exhibition viewing on-site.
Lee Jung-kyu, director of the Seoul Science Museum, said, "We expect that conducting science education programs together with a specialized company in the life sciences field will enhance both the fun and understanding of basic science," adding, "Based on the Seoul Science Museum's expertise in science education, we will expand educational channels online and offline and cooperate with various private companies to help students develop interest and enthusiasm in biology."
