[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] On the 1st, the government appointed Son Hyuk-sang, former Vice President for External Affairs at Kyung Hee University, as the President of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).
Newly appointed President Son Hyuk-sang has served as the President of the Korean Association for International Development Cooperation, Director of the International Development Cooperation Research Center at Kyung Hee University, and has acted as an advisory member for numerous domestic and international organizations including the Office for Government Policy Coordination, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Korean National Commission for UNESCO.
Based on his expertise in the field of development cooperation, he is expected to contribute to KOICA's advancement as the Republic of Korea's leading agency for official development assistance.
President Son served as a non-standing director of KOICA from 2016 to 2017 and has also worked as a KOICA policy advisory committee member and innovation committee member, demonstrating a deep understanding of KOICA’s projects and overall organization. He is also expected to contribute to KOICA’s efforts to align its projects with the government’s foreign policy and the international community’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The term of office for the President of the Korea International Cooperation Agency is three years, selected through a process including public recruitment and review by the executive recommendation committee, and may be renewed annually after the term expires.
