[Asia Economy Reporter Byunghee Park] The Korean Symphony Orchestra is the first domestic orchestra to present content on an online video service (OTT).
The Korean Symphony announced on the 30th that it will showcase performance videos incorporating 5G media technologies such as 'multiview and multiaudio' as original content on Wavve and Btv. This is a collaboration between the Korean Symphony, SK Telecom, and Credia to introduce a new form of online performance.
The performance by the Korean Symphony Orchestra and pianist Donghyuk Lim was captured using 11 cameras and 40 microphones, and the immersive video combining multiview and multiaudio technology can be experienced on the OTT platform Wavve.
Multiview consists of seven perspectives: ▲director's cut ▲conductor ▲pianist ▲string and wind sections ▲audience seats ▲expert commentary. It delicately captures scenes that can be missed even in live performances, from the conductor’s fingertips to the pianist’s facial expressions and the subtle vibrations of the timpani. Additionally, advanced IT features such as split-screen selection (Flexible UI), which allows viewers to collect only the desired screens, and pinch-zoom functionality that enlarges the screen up to four times, provide a unique way to enjoy the video.
The multiaudio feature, which allows emphasis on the sound of specific performers and sections, is also noteworthy. It offers a sound experience that can only be felt from each perspective, such as the difference between the sound heard by the conductor on the podium and the audience, or the sounds of strings and wind instruments, enabling viewers to discover the charm of orchestral music like never before. The differentiated sound, finely tuned by Tonmeister (recording director) Jin Choi, is another highlight.
Furthermore, videos featuring classical music experts Sangmin Lee, Jiyoung Lee, and Deokho Hwang kindly explaining the key points of this performance are added, expected to serve as a guide for audiences who found orchestral music difficult to approach.
The program includes Beethoven’s "Piano Concerto No. 3" and "Symphony No. 1," as well as the overture to Mozart’s opera "The Marriage of Figaro," commemorating the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth.
At age thirty, Beethoven rented the Burgtheater in Vienna to present his new works "Symphony No. 1" and "Piano Concerto No. 3" together, aiming to establish his presence as a composer. However, he did not complete the "Piano Concerto No. 3," leaving it an unfinished goal. After 220 years, under the baton of conductor Jiyong Jeong, the Korean Symphony Orchestra and Donghyuk Lim restore and vividly record that day’s concert.
Pianist Donghyuk Lim, who performed as a soloist, is a representative Korean classical star who has won prizes in three of the world’s top competitions, including the Tchaikovsky Competition. He recently completed a nationwide tour of Beethoven sonatas.
Wavve users can watch the "On:Classic" multiview video for free in the '5GX' theater of the mobile application. VOD is also available for purchase. On Wavve and Btv, rental is priced at 10,000 KRW and ownership at 18,900 KRW. The package consists of a total of seven VODs, including six individual videos provided in multiview and a mult-angle version (director’s cut + 4 screens).
