Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award Goes to High School Division Grand Prize Winner 'Seoul Arts High School Student Gu Jeonghwan'
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki Ha-young] The award ceremony for the 'Samsung Life Insurance Art Competition,' which marked its 40th anniversary this year, was held online for the first time on the 29th.
The ceremony, streamed on Samsung Life Insurance's YouTube channel, was attended simultaneously by about 300 participants, including finalists in the painting category and participants in the character and webtoon categories, and was conducted non-face-to-face.
The highest honor, the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award, was awarded to student Gu Jeonghwan (2nd year at Seoul Arts High School), who won the grand prize in the high school division. Gu Jeonghwan's work, "Daily Life," received high scores for its expressive power and imagination through bold composition, unique colors, and delicate techniques.
Gu Jeonghwan said, "I tried to express the everyday feeling inside the bus, which for some is the way to school and for others the way to work, and the digital world visible in various places within it, with the theme that it is distant yet very close." He added, "This joyful imagination has returned as a great prize. I am truly grateful."
The grand prize in the middle school division went to student Jeong Eunchae (2nd year at Daegu Dongpyeong Middle School), and the grand prizes for the upper elementary (grades 4-6) and lower elementary (grades 1-3) divisions were awarded to students Kang Jimin (4th grade at Hwaseong Geumgok Elementary School) and Kim Hyunjun (1st grade at Seoul Yeongdong Elementary School), respectively. In addition, a total of 1,000 students enjoyed the joy of winning, including 12 winners of the work award, 84 special selections, and 900 honorable mentions across various categories. In the character and webtoon categories, which were held for middle school, high school, and university divisions, a total of 43 teams received awards.
Starting in 1981 as the 'National Student Practical Drawing Competition,' the Samsung Life Insurance Art Competition has established itself as the most prestigious art competition in Korea over 40 years. The cumulative number of participants has reached 5.48 million to date. This year, marking the 40th anniversary, a character and webtoon category, popular among young people, was newly introduced alongside the general painting category.
Meanwhile, the award-winning works can be viewed on the Samsung Life Insurance Art Competition website starting December 1, and prize money and commemorative gifts will be individually delivered to the winners in December.
