[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Eun-young] A woman in her 20s in Brazil was sentenced to 65 years in prison after brutally killing her 10-year-old son out of hatred for her estranged husband and abandoning his body in a suitcase.
On the 26th (local time), according to foreign media including The Sun, the mutilated body of a child was found inside an abandoned bag near an orphanage in Samambaia, near the Brazilian capital Bras?lia.
The body, presumed to be that of a teenage boy, was divided between a suitcase and two backpacks. Multiple stab wounds were found on the body, and it was reported that the head had even been severed and placed in the bag along with a knife.
The witness who first discovered the bags immediately reported to the police. The witness testified that a woman hurriedly abandoned the suitcase and backpacks during a moment when the area was deserted and then left the scene.
The witness further identified the woman who abandoned the bags as Rosana Candido (27), a nearby resident. It was added that the body inside the bag was presumed to be her son, Luan Castro (10).
Based on the witness's testimony, the police launched an investigation and arrested Candido and her cohabitant, Sila Pessoa (28).
Investigations revealed that Candido stabbed her son Luan, who was sleeping at home, more than 11 times in the eyes and chest with a sharp weapon, killing him. Pessoa held Luan’s hands and feet to prevent him from escaping.
Afterwards, the two placed the body in two backpacks and a suitcase, transported them to the orphanage, and abandoned them. It was further revealed that they had initially planned to dispose of the body by burning it on a barbecue grill, which shocked many.
Investigations also showed that they often justified their crimes by likening themselves to 'gods of justice' and frequently subjected Luan to verbal abuse and physical torture. In particular, mother Candido reportedly inflicted retaliatory abuse on her son out of hatred for her estranged husband.
She admitted during police questioning, "My hatred toward the child grew, and we conspired to commit the crime."
The local court sentenced Candido and Pessoa to 65 years and 64 years in prison, respectively, for killing and abandoning the child.
Luan’s father, Maicon Castro, said, "The punishment is too lenient for killing my son," but added, "At least they will never be able to leave prison again."
