[Asia Economy Reporter No Woo-rae] Phil Mickelson and Charles Barkley (both from the United States) won an event tournament.
On the 28th (Korean time), at Stone Canyon Golf Club in Oro Valley, Arizona, USA, they defeated the Stephen Curry-Peyton Manning (both from the United States) team by 4 holes in the 'Capital One The Match: Champions for Change'. Mickelson, who has won 44 PGA Tour events including 5 majors, teamed up with NBA legend Barkley, while current NBA star Curry and former NFL star quarterback Manning formed the opposing team.
The match was played in a match play format where each player took their own tee shot and then alternately hit the ball from the better position. The Mickelson-Barkley team lost the 1st hole (par 4) but won the 2nd hole (par 5) to tie the score, then won holes 3 through 5 consecutively to pull ahead by 3 holes. They extended the lead to 4 holes by winning the 7th hole, and ultimately maintained the 4-hole lead at the 15th hole (also par 5), securing victory without playing the remaining 3 holes.
Many predicted that the Curry-Manning team, composed of 'amateur masters', would have the advantage because Barkley's golf skills, despite being Mickelson's teammate, were poor. However, the result was the opposite. Barkley showed preparedness by practicing 4 to 5 hours a day. Mickelson had previously won an event match against Tiger Woods (USA) in 2018, and in May this year, he teamed up with NFL star Tom Brady (USA) and narrowly lost by 1 hole to the Woods-Manning team.
