KOICA Signs Contract with PwC Consulting for Digital Transformation... Leading Post-Corona Development Cooperation

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] KOICA has announced on the 27th that it has signed a contract with PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting (PwC Consulting) to promote the institution's digital transformation in line with the government's Korean New Deal policy and digital government innovation development plan, and will begin establishing a full-scale digital transformation strategy.

Through this contract, KOICA and PwC Consulting plan to measure the institution's digital maturity and, based on this, analyze the internal and external environment of the development cooperation sector, current project status, and organizational systems to derive strategies and detailed implementation tasks for KOICA's digital transformation, and establish a mid- to long-term roadmap.

KOICA recognized the need for accelerated digital transformation amid the COVID-19 situation and established a 'Digital Transformation Special Task Force' in July to set the basic direction for digital transformation. This includes innovation of business models such as ▲ development of new digital businesses based on a digital management system and a flexible and agile organizational culture, ▲ contributing to the digital transformation and inequality resolution in partner countries, and ▲ expanding the ecosystem by strengthening the role of the domestic development cooperation data platform.

Additionally, KOICA operates a big data-based cybersecurity center to establish a thorough information security system and has strengthened the safety management of overseas dispatched personnel through a cloud-based safety management system. Due to difficulties in face-to-face activities caused by COVID-19, training for partner country officials and volunteer dispatch projects have been switched to non-face-to-face methods, proceeding through online training and remote volunteering (e-volunteering).

As part of this digital transformation effort, KOICA held the 'KOICA Innovation Idea Contest for the Digital New Deal' from September to October. The contest was divided into three categories: digital innovation, data utilization, and digital jobs.

Award-winning works include 'KOICA VR Service Bringing KOICA Closer to the People' and 'Integrated System for Strengthening Volunteer Team Capabilities Using Field Data.' KOICA plans to gradually incorporate the ideas selected in this contest into project operations.

Shin Myung-seop, Director of Planning and Coordination at KOICA, stated, “As Korea's representative development cooperation institution, KOICA plans to quickly adapt to the changed international development cooperation environment due to the COVID-19 pandemic, promote digital transformation of projects and management, contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and simultaneously contribute to digital job creation and innovation in line with the Korean Digital New Deal.”
