Changwon City to Establish Advanced Materials Demonstration Research Complex ... 382 Billion KRW Invested Changwon Mayor Heo Seong-mu is presenting Lee Jeong-hwan, Director of the Korea Institute of Materials Science, with a Cheonrihyang flowerpot inscribed with the phrase "Hwahangcheonri (花香千里) Gisulmanri (技術萬理)."

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kang Sharon] An advanced materials demonstration research complex will be established in Jinhae-gu, Changwon-si, Gyeongnam.

Changwon City and the Korea Institute of Materials Science signed a business agreement on the 26th at the site of the 2nd Materials Research Institute in Yeojwa District, Jinhae-gu, to create an advanced materials demonstration research complex.

Changwon City received ownership of the Yeojwa District in Jinhae, formerly home to the Army University and Naval Education Command, from the Ministry of National Defense and began a project in 2018 to transform it into a research complex.

The 2nd Materials Research Institute, Advanced Warship Research Center, public rental knowledge industry center, regional strategic industry support housing, and small and medium-sized special ship support center will be located in Yeojwa District.

Changwon City and the Korea Institute of Materials Science will develop the 2nd Materials Research Institute into an advanced materials demonstration research complex.

The main institute of the Materials Research Institute in Seongsan-gu focuses on fundamental technology research and development, while the 2nd Materials Research Institute in Yeojwa District will be utilized as an advanced base for the practical application of materials technology supporting manufacturing innovation.

In the first phase, by 2023, a Smart Power Unit Manufacturing Center, Metal Materials Self-Reliance Center, and Safety Materials Demonstration Center will be built in Yeojwa District. In the second phase, by 2027, additional research buildings such as a Technology Commercialization Center, Ultra-High Temperature Materials Evaluation Center, and Aviation Materials Localization Demonstration Center will be added.

Changwon City will provide the site for the advanced materials demonstration research complex. The Korea Institute of Materials Science will develop and operate the research complex. The total project scale is 382 billion KRW.

On this day, Changwon Mayor Heo Seong-mu congratulated the Korea Institute of Materials Science on its promotion to an independent research institution and presented Director Lee Jeong-hwan with a potted Cheonrihyang plant inscribed with the phrase "Hwahangcheonri (花香千里) Gisulmanri (技術萬理)," symbolizing the institute's technology reaching worldwide.

Mayor Heo stated, “With the launch of the Materials Research Institute and the establishment of the 2nd Materials Research Institute as an advanced materials demonstration research complex, we will foster Changwon’s manufacturing industry into a new manufacturing industry where advanced materials, ICT, and manufacturing engineering services converge, achieving a great innovation in Changwon’s manufacturing sector.”
