[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Yuri] The World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended that adults engage in at least 150 minutes of exercise per week even amid the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) situation.
On the 26th (local time), WHO stated in its guidelines that all adults, including those with chronic diseases or disabilities, should perform 150 to 300 minutes of aerobic exercise per week. It also advised that children and adolescents should engage in an average of 60 minutes of physical activity daily.
WHO explained that this helps prevent and manage diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer, while reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety and improving memory and brain health.
WHO pointed out that one in four adults and four in five adolescents do not get enough physical activity, estimating that this results in direct healthcare costs of $54 billion (approximately 60 trillion KRW) and productivity losses of $14 billion (approximately 15.5 trillion KRW) worldwide.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, "Every movement counts," adding, "Especially to manage the restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, everyone should move safely and creatively every day."
