Kim Geonan, Gwangju Buk-gu Council Member, Urges Establishment of Electric Scooter Safety Measures

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yukbong] Kim Geonan, a member of the Buk-gu Council of Gwangju Metropolitan City (Usan-dong, Munheung 1·2-dong, Ochi 1·2-dong), urged safety measures for the use of electric kickboards for residents' safety during the 2020 Safety City Committee administrative audit on the 26th.

With the amendment to the Road Traffic Act, passed by the National Assembly last May, coming into effect on the 10th of next month, individuals aged 13 and older will be able to use electric kickboards without a motorized vehicle license, which is expected to lead to an increase in related accidents.

Councilor Kim Geonan stated, "Recently, electric kickboard users can be easily seen around, and from now on, even teenagers aged 13 can use them. Since there is no penalty for not wearing safety equipment such as helmets, a sharp increase in accidents is expected."

He continued, "There is also no separate insurance that can be subscribed to in case of electric kickboard accidents, so victim protection measures are problematic," adding, "As regulations on personal mobility devices have been relaxed, institutional measures regarding safety must be promptly established."
