[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] The National Courier Solidarity Labor Union (Courier Solidarity) and others filed a grievance petition with the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission on the afternoon of the 26th, demanding improvements to the poor working conditions of Korea Post courier workers.

Courier Solidarity requested basic and urgent matters such as air conditioning and heating in sorting workplaces during extreme heat and cold seasons, and the provision of minimal rest areas.

These are issues that have been continuously requested for improvement from the Korea Post Headquarters and the Korea Post Logistics Support Group.

A session was also held to listen to the general contents of the grievance and to gather Courier Solidarity's opinions on the matter.

At this session, Courier Solidarity asked the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission to take an active role with a sense of duty to ensure that the poor working conditions can be improved.

Kwon Geun-sang, head of the Government Joint Civil Petition Center, said, "Since there are different positions and circumstances on both sides, it is difficult to guarantee satisfactory results, but we will do our best to improve the working conditions of courier workers even a little."

Jeon Hyun-hee, chairperson of the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission, said, "It is regrettable that the poor working conditions at courier sites and the unreasonable practices that still persist," adding, "Since the government operates Korea Post courier services, it should lead by example in the industry by promptly reaching agreements between parties on issues that can be resolved first."

The Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission plans to listen to the opinions of the Korea Post Headquarters and the Korea Post Logistics Support Group regarding the submitted grievance petition, inspect major sites, and then prepare reasonable solutions through a discussion process involving all parties.
