[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kang Sharon] The mayor of Geoje City, Gyeongnam, visited the National Assembly on the 25th and 26th to launch an all-out effort to secure national funding for the next year.

Mayor Byeon Gwang-yong visited the National Assembly while the 2021 government budget National Assembly Budget and Accounts Special Committee Budget Adjustment Subcommittee was in session, meeting with Park Jae-ho (Budget Subcommittee member) and Park Hong-geun (Budget Subcommittee secretary) to request support to ensure full reflection of local pending projects.

On this day, Mayor Byeon explained the project details and necessity for five projects: ▲ National Road No.14 (Ilun Sodong section) widening and extension construction (6.3 billion KRW) ▲ Geoje City Labor Welfare Center remodeling project (2.1 billion KRW) ▲ National Road No.5 (Geoje Jangmok~Changwon Gusan) bridge detailed design cost (500 million KRW) ▲ 2021 Hope Work Support Project (9 billion KRW) ▲ 2021 Local-led Youth Job Project (3.2 billion KRW), and requested budget increases during the National Assembly review stage.

Mayor Byeon emphasized that due to the sharp decline in shipbuilding and marine plant orders, large-scale workforce restructuring in the region is inevitable, and with the spread of COVID-19 further depressing the local economy, employment stabilization measures such as the Hope Work Project and Local-led Youth Job Project are urgently needed.

After meeting with the Budget Special Committee members, Mayor Byeon immediately met with Choi In-ho (Senior Spokesperson of the Democratic Party), member of the Agriculture, Food, Rural Affairs, Oceans and Fisheries Committee, to request support for regional marine and fisheries projects including the 2021 Fishing Village New Deal 300 contest project, Jangmok Port national fishing port development project, and Jiseopo Port multifunctional fishing port development project.

Mayor Byeon said, “I will do my best until the budget is finally confirmed so that this national funding can serve as a catalyst for the recovery of Geoje’s economy, which is suffering from the double hardship of the shipbuilding recession and COVID-19.”

The government budget for next year is scheduled to be finalized on the 2nd of next month after review by the Budget Subcommittee this month.
