[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Ji-hee] Genesis announced on the 26th that it has developed and will equip intelligent automotive technology that enhances convenience and safety by utilizing biometric recognition in the GV70, which is scheduled to be unveiled next month.

The GV70 will also feature new technologies such as the ‘In-vehicle Simple Payment Genesis CarPay-linked Fingerprint Authentication System’ and radar sensor-based ‘Advanced Rear Seat Occupant Alert.’

The fingerprint authentication technology linked with the in-vehicle simple payment system ‘Genesis CarPay’ has been installed for the first time in the automotive industry on the GV70. While technologies allowing door opening, ignition, and driving via fingerprint authentication have already been applied, the distinctive feature here is that electronic payments can be executed solely through fingerprint recognition, enhancing driver convenience and security.

Before making a payment, instead of entering the conventional six-digit numeric password during the identity verification step, customers can conveniently use Genesis CarPay by authenticating their fingerprint on the fingerprint recognition sensor located below the start button.

Additionally, GV70 customers can use the fingerprint authentication system even in valet mode, which prevents personal information such as home address and phonebook from appearing on the infotainment screen when using parking or driving services entrusted to others. After activating valet mode and setting a four-digit one-time password, the valet mode can be deactivated not only by entering the set password but also through fingerprint authentication once the service is completed.

The fingerprint authentication system installed in the GV70 is also linked to vehicle ignition and driver-specific seat personalization settings. GV70 customers can remotely unlock the car doors via the Genesis Connected app on their smartphones without carrying the smart key and start the engine simply by fingerprint recognition. When the driver starts the engine through fingerprint authentication, personalized settings such as the driver’s seat position, steering wheel position, head-up display position, recent navigation destinations, and infotainment volume stored under that fingerprint are automatically applied.

Genesis has applied the world’s first radar sensor-based Advanced Rear Seat Occupant Alert technology, which is more precise than the existing ultrasonic sensors, to the GV70. The Rear Seat Occupant Alert detects passengers seated in the rear seats using radar sensors installed inside the vehicle and provides step-by-step alerts to the driver.

This technology infers whether someone is in the second row by detecting the opening and closing of the rear doors, and when the driver turns off the ignition and opens the driver’s door, it initially notifies the driver of remaining passengers through a cluster warning message and alert sound.

If the driver does not acknowledge the first alert and exits the vehicle, the radar sensor embedded in the interior ceiling detects the presence of passengers in the second row, activates the hazard lights, and sounds an alarm. Simultaneously, a text message is sent to the driver. Notably, the radar sensor applied in the GV70 accurately detects not only large movements such as arms and legs of rear seat occupants but also subtle chest movements caused by breathing, alerting the driver even if a sleeping infant remains in the second row. The radar sensor can detect up to the rear of the second row, allowing it to also recognize movements of pets left in the cargo area after disembarking and notify the driver.

A Genesis official stated, “Through the fingerprint authentication system, we have enhanced infotainment usability to allow customers to use vehicle ignition and personalization services more conveniently, and by using precise radar sensors, we can protect rear seat occupants more safely. In the future, we plan to advance biometric recognition technology by comprehensively analyzing data collected from various vehicle sensors to enable safer and more convenient vehicle use in diverse mobility environments.”
