Gwangyang-si, National Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 60 Jangdojang 'Park Geon-yeong Isuja' Passes Evaluation

Gwangyang Jangdo Establishes Touchstone for 3 Generations of Inherited Lineage

Gwangyang-si, National Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 60 Jangdojang 'Park Geon-yeong Isuja' Passes Evaluation

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Gwangyang City announced on the 25th that Park Geon-young (3rd generation), the successor of the national intangible cultural asset No. 60 Jangdojang (2nd generation Park Jong-gun), passed this year’s ‘National Intangible Cultural Heritage Successor Examination’ conducted by the Cultural Heritage Administration’s National Intangible Heritage Center.

The successor system is a system where individuals who have completed the transmission education of the relevant national intangible cultural heritage from the holder or holder group of the national intangible cultural heritage and pass the successor examination (skill test) conducted by the state are issued a certificate of succession.

On the 28th of last month, the National Intangible Heritage Center visited the Gwangyang Jangdo Transmission Education Center workshop to conduct the successor examination for the national intangible cultural asset No. 60 Jangdojang.

The examination committee consisted of five experts from academia, including cultural heritage committee members of the Cultural Heritage Administration, and practical skills and interviews were conducted in the presence of related officials and a video filming team.

Successor Park Geon-young entered as a transmission scholarship student for Jangdojang in 2013 and has been recognized for his abilities in the field of traditional crafts at various national competitions, winning awards such as ‘1st place in the 2017 Jewelry Creator Specialization Project Creativity Cultivation Competition,’ ‘Special Selection at the 8th Korean Royal Craft Exhibition in 2019,’ and ‘Special Award at the 25th Jeonju Traditional Craft National Exhibition in 2020.’

Becoming a national intangible cultural heritage successor grants a Level 2 Cultural Arts Educator certificate, allowing one to work at various cultural and artistic facilities and participate in transmission activities supported by the state.

Jangdojang Park Jong-gun said, “This is the first successor produced in 10 years since the designation of Jangdojang (2nd generation Park Jong-gun) as a holder in 2011, continuing the transmission lineage of Jangdojang.”

Lee Gi-seop, Director of the Culture and Arts Division, said, “It is a great honor that Park Geon-young, the successor of National Intangible Cultural Asset No. 60 Jangdojang, passed the strict and fair successor examination of the National Intangible Heritage Center,” and added, “I hope this will serve as an opportunity to revitalize the Gwangyang Transmission Education Center.”
