Songpa-gu 'Bicycle Maintenance Experience Class' Free Training

Operating a Workshop for Practicing Bicycle Tire, Tube, Saddle, and Pedal Replacement... Expanding Education to Encourage Bicycle Use as a Solo Transportation Means in the With-Corona Era

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Songpa-gu (Mayor Park Seong-su) is operating a free "Bicycle Maintenance Experience Class" for self-maintenance, reflecting the trend of increased bicycle use instead of public transportation such as subways and buses due to COVID-19.

This bicycle maintenance experience class is held on Saturdays for office workers who find it difficult to attend weekday classes. It will be held a total of 4 times, twice each on November 14 and 28 (6 participants per session). The curriculum includes common everyday repairs such as fixing punctures, gear adjustment, and replacing saddles and pedals.

The maintenance training consists of ▲theory classes (20 minutes) covering basic bicycle theory and how to use maintenance tools, and ▲practical classes (100 minutes) where participants actually replace bicycle tires, tubes, saddles, and pedals to fix punctures, totaling 2 hours.

This experience class is conducted twice daily, morning and afternoon, at Jamsil Bicycle Center by mechanic Kim Hak-su, who has over 10 years of repair experience. In addition to maintenance, he provides various information such as how to use air pumps and where to purchase tire parts.

One participant said, "I have three bicycles including my own at home, and I wanted to repair my grandchild’s bicycle myself, so I applied for this class." He added, "I always wanted to try simple repairs like fixing punctures myself, and it was a valuable time because I could immediately ask questions and get answers."

Depending on residents' response, the bicycle maintenance experience class plans to increase the duration and number of sessions in 2021.
