[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Jun-kyung] Kim Han-jong, chairman of the Jeonnam Provincial Council, received the ‘2020 Proud Korean National Award’ in the local autonomy and legislative category on the 24th.

The ‘Korean National Award’ is an awards ceremony hosted by the Korean National Award Committee and organized by the Korean National Movement Headquarters, celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. It honors leading figures in various fields who have contributed to Korea’s change and innovative growth.

Chairman Kim Han-jong was finally selected as the recipient of the ‘2020 Proud Korean National Award’ in the local autonomy and legislative category in recognition of his contributions to the development of local autonomy and local councils.

Kim Han-jong, a three-term council member, currently serves as the chairman of the Jeonnam Provincial Council and the chairman of the National Association of Chairpersons of City and Provincial Councils, working to establish the status and strengthen the capabilities of local governments and local councils.

In particular, he made efforts to pass the ‘Complete Revision of the Local Autonomy Act’ within the year and carried out legislative activities for decentralization, receiving high evaluations from the media, related organizations, and associations.

Chairman Kim Han-jong said, “I feel heavy-hearted as all citizens are going through difficult times due to COVID-19,” and added, “At times like this, local councils must work harder to stabilize people’s livelihoods by being with residents in their daily lives and providing support.”

He continued, “I will do my best to help local councils gain residents’ trust and to further mature local autonomy in the Republic of Korea.”
