Arts Council to Present 22 New Works of Changjak Sansil This Year Starting December

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] The Korea Arts & Culture Education Service (Arts Council Korea) will present 22 selected works from the '2020 Performing Arts Creation Workshop - New Works of the Year' from December 11 this year to March 28 next year at Arko Arts Theater and Daehakro Arts Theater.

The Creation Workshop New Works of the Year is a representative domestic performing arts support project that has reached its 13th year this year. In May, the Arts Council Korea selected a total of 22 works across five genres (theater, dance, traditional arts, original musicals, original operas) as 'New Works of the Year.'

'New Works of the Year' is the Arts Council Korea's flagship support project that discovers excellent original repertoires through annual support at each stage (planning - showcase (staging) - main performance) across all performing arts genres, from production to distribution.

The original musical 'Hope,' selected as the 2018 'New Work of the Year,' achieved a triple crown at the Yegreen Awards and won eight categories at the 4th Musical Awards in 2020. Also, the play 'Bilmi' by the theater company In-eo, selected in 2018, won the grand prize at the 12th Korea Theater Awards. The original opera 'The Temple of Dolls,' selected as the 2018 'New Work of the Year,' received the grand prize at the 12th Korea Opera Awards.

A total of 194 groups applied for the 2020 Creation Workshop 'New Works of the Year.' After the first document screening, second PT/interview screening, and third live performance screening, five theater works (▲Evolution of Love ▲The Day of the Egg ▲Nuran Nuran ▲The Road to Cannes ▲Hard Labor), eight dance works (▲Make Peace ▲BLACK ▲Plastic Bird ▲Homo Mobilicus ▲Quiet Circulation ▲But Why Did You Eat the Apple? ▲Two Tongues - A Double Tongue ▲Stone), three traditional arts works (▲New Simbanggok ▲New Pansori 'The Hen Who Left the Yard' ▲Ullil Gwong轟), four original musicals (▲Graffiti ▲Heathcliff ▲Who Lives in the Kuroi Mansion ▲Inside William), and two original operas (▲The Snake Ate the Heart ▲Termites in the Desert) were finally selected.

Meanwhile, the Arts Council Korea will expand the 'Arko Live' video project of the Creation Workshop, which was first introduced last year. Last year, the Arts Council Korea signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with CGV to promote the video commercialization of the Performing Arts Creation Workshop and screened four 'New Works of the Year' under the name 'Arko Live.' This year, starting from the end of January next year, six works will be screened sequentially, including four 2020 'New Works of the Year' original premieres and outstanding repertoire selections such as the musical 'Hope' and 'Sidereus.'

The Creation Workshop 'New Works of the Year' can also be enjoyed via online live streaming on Naver TV. The 'Support' function is applied during the online live streaming. The support function is designed to encourage and cheer on the 'New Works of the Year' groups who created and completed new works despite the somewhat subdued atmosphere due to the COVID-19 pandemic, allowing audiences to voluntarily pay for live viewing tickets. All support funds from online live streaming are fully delivered to the arts groups, and special rewards prepared by the arts groups will be provided only to audiences who support above a certain amount. Detailed information will be announced later.
