Gwangju City Improves Intersections Around Yongdu Intersection to Bonchon Direction to Alleviate Chronic Congestion

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 24th that it will carry out traffic system improvement construction around Yongdu Intersection in Buk-gu from the end of this month until the end of this year to resolve traffic congestion in habitual congestion areas.

Recently, 2,418 households have moved into Bonchon Hillstate Daewoo Ian, Jin Ari Chae, and other complexes in the direction of Bonchon, causing long queues during commuting hours and resulting in traffic congestion. Complaints about road usage inconvenience due to increased traffic volume are also rising.

In particular, the section from Yongdu Intersection to Bonchon direction has a very narrow road width of 5.5 meters, and there is a level difference between the road and the surrounding farmland, causing inconvenience for passenger cars and medium to large vehicles passing each other.

Additionally, due to worn-out lane markings, lanes are hard to see at night, making passage difficult. On the lower side road of Yongdu Intersection, traffic safety measures such as lane repainting are needed to prevent traffic accidents like wrong-way driving.

Accordingly, Gwangju City plans to improve the traffic system over a 1 km section by installing colored lane surface guidance (color lanes) for the detour lane from Bitgoeul-daero to Bonchon direction, reorganizing worn-out lanes and readjusting lane widths from Yongdu Intersection to Bonchon direction, and installing surface facilities (marker posts, guide posts, etc.) at the level difference section between the road and surrounding farmland.

Park Gap-su, head of the city's Traffic Policy Division, said, “We will do our best to create a pleasant and smoothly flowing road through the traffic system improvement construction around Yongdu Intersection,” and added, “Although there may be some inconvenience during the construction period, we ask for careful driving for safety.”
