[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy will hold the '2020 Korea Eureka Day' online from the 24th to the 25th to promote global technology cooperation with advanced European technology countries.
Eureka is a market-oriented international joint research and development (R&D) consortium involving 46 member countries centered in Europe. Korea joined Eureka in 2009 as the first non-European associate member and was promoted to partner country status in 2018.
This event is organized to discover overseas R&D partners and discuss international joint R&D planning among excellent Korea-Europe global industry-academia-research collaborations.
Domestically, 118 industry-academia-research organizations including THN (automotive parts) and BMT (industrial valves) are participating. Overseas, 245 companies, research institutes, and universities such as WATERLEAU Group, an energy equipment company specializing in water treatment from Belgium, and MEDrecord, a biohealth company from the Netherlands, will conduct about 500 one-on-one video meetings and share idea pitch videos.
The event programs, including ▲Korea-Europe Technology Cooperation Forum ▲Eureka Seminar ▲Korea-Europe Company Idea Pitch ▲B2B Matchmaking, will be held non-face-to-face.
At the Korea-Europe Technology Cooperation Forum, keynote speeches on Korea's hydrogen vehicles and bio-related research trends and Europe's green and digital transition policies will be delivered. The Eureka Seminar will introduce each country's R&D strategies in the post-COVID-19 era from the UK, Spain, Finland, Austria, Canada, and others.
Recently, notable achievements have emerged through Eureka. HPK participated in international joint technology development through Eureka and succeeded in developing display manufacturing technology with France and Belgium, entering the global value chain. It also won the Eureka Innovation Award in 2017.
Oisolution developed next-generation network equipment technology with the Netherlands and Finland in 2018 to preoccupy the current market, increasing related product sales by about nine times.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy plans to support funding through a public contest for excellent R&D projects of domestic companies that discover European technology cooperation partners through this event. Korea plans to significantly increase Eureka support funds to 100 billion KRW over the next five years.
Deputy Minister Park Jin-gyu emphasized in a congratulatory video message, "As the world's largest technology cooperation platform, Eureka will play an even more important role in the post-COVID-19 era, which will bring about massive industrial environmental changes such as digital transformation."
Deputy Minister Park stated, "We will share Korea's Eureka activity experience with countries in Asia and others wishing to participate in Eureka, propose new cooperation programs focusing on new industries such as hydrogen and future vehicles, and further expand our role as the only non-European Eureka partner country."
