Seoul Metropolitan Institute of Health and Environment and National Institute of Meteorological Sciences Share Greenhouse Gas Observation Data

[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] The Seoul Institute of Health and Environment and the National Institute of Meteorological Sciences announced on the 24th that they will sign an institutional business agreement to share greenhouse gas observation data from national monitoring stations and the Seoul urban area and to conduct research on climate change response.

The Seoul Institute of Health and Environment is the only institution in Korea that proactively measures carbon dioxide in urban areas, currently operating real-time greenhouse gas observation networks at three locations: Gwanaksan, Namsan, and Olympic Park.

The National Institute of Meteorological Sciences, as a national greenhouse gas measurement agency, observes seven types of greenhouse gases in real-time at climate change monitoring stations in Anmyeondo, Jeju Island Gosan, Ulleungdo, and Dokdo, and is conducting various meteorological research such as greenhouse gas monitoring using advanced observation equipment and developing climate change scenarios based on international standards.

The detailed contents of this research exchange agreement include ▲sharing greenhouse gas observation technology and data ▲joint research to improve the reliability of measurement data ▲education and training and exchange of professional personnel ▲exchange of academic information and joint research paper writing, and other mutual cooperation for the advancement of science and technology.

Both parties expect that the three-dimensional greenhouse gas information produced through cooperation between national institutions and local governments will enable analysis of contributions by country and region, contributing to achieving the goal of 'Carbon Neutrality by 2050.'

Shin Yong-seung, Director of the Seoul Institute of Health and Environment, said, "Greenhouse gas observation is fundamental for carbon neutrality, but a lot of effort is required to obtain accurate and continuous data," adding, "Through this agreement, it will be a valuable opportunity for government and local government research institutions to cooperate to establish a greenhouse gas observation network covering both urban and background areas and to secure reliability through mutual strengthening of research capabilities."
