Samsung and LG Report New COVID-19 Cases... Strengthening Remote Work and Quarantine Measures

Samsung and LG Report New COVID-19 Cases... Strengthening Remote Work and Quarantine Measures Samsung Electronics Suwon Campus (Yonhap News) / LG Twin Tower

[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Another case of COVID-19 has been confirmed at LG Twin Towers, where major LG Group affiliates are located, and at Samsung Electronics' Suwon campus.

According to industry sources on the 23rd, an employee working in the R5 building, where the wireless division is located at Samsung Electronics' Suwon campus, tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday afternoon.

In response, Samsung Electronics disinfected the entire building on the same day and plans to close the floor where the infected employee worked until the 25th. There was also a confirmed COVID-19 case at Samsung Electronics' Suwon campus on the 18th.

As COVID-19 cases have recently resurged, Samsung Electronics began a second phase of pilot remote work for volunteers in the Consumer Electronics (CE) and Information Technology (IT) & Mobile (IM) divisions starting from the 16th. The duration of this second remote work phase will be flexibly determined based on the COVID-19 situation. Samsung Electronics also conducted a pilot remote work program in some divisions last September.

Facility management has strengthened disinfection according to government quarantine authority standards, limited meeting attendance to 20 people, and reduced event sizes to fewer than 50 participants for restricted operation. Mandatory mask-wearing is strictly enforced within the company, and real-time notifications are provided to employees through the COVID-19 task force (TF).

Earlier, on the 20th, an LG Chem employee working in the East Tower of LG Twin Towers in Yeouido, Seoul, also tested positive for COVID-19.

LG Chem immediately closed the floor where the infected employee worked upon confirming the test results and took disinfection measures. Additionally, about 160 employees working on the same floor were instructed to undergo diagnostic testing. The results of these tests are expected on the same day.

Following the COVID-19 case at the Twin Towers, LG Group is applying its group-level 'Social Distancing Step 3 Response Guidelines' for one week starting from the 23rd. Seventy percent of employees working at the Twin Towers will switch to remote work, and group events or dinners are prohibited. Domestic and international business trips and external meetings are also restricted. Meetings with more than 10 participants are banned.

In September, five LG Electronics employees on floors 6 to 9 of the West Tower at LG Twin Towers were confirmed positive, leading to large-scale diagnostic testing.
