[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] On the 22nd at around 7:07 PM, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake occurred off the coast of Ibaraki Prefecture in northeastern Japan.
The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the earthquake, with a focal depth of about 40 km, caused a maximum seismic intensity of lower 5 on the Japanese seismic scale in Tokaimura, Ibaraki Prefecture.
Seismic intensity 5, as classified by the Japan Meteorological Agency, is a level at which most people feel fear and feel the need to hold onto objects.
In the Tokyo area, a seismic intensity of 3 (where almost everyone indoors can feel the shaking) was observed.
The Meteorological Agency stated that there is no concern for a tsunami following this earthquake but urged caution regarding the possibility of landslides.
The Tokai No. 2 Nuclear Power Plant in Tokaimura temporarily suspended operations after the earthquake to check for any abnormalities.
Additionally, the Tohoku Shinkansen suspended operations between Tochigi Prefecture and Fukushima Prefecture but resumed shortly thereafter.
