[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Jang Jae-seong, a member of the Gwangju Metropolitan Council (Democratic Party of Korea, Seo-gu 1), announced on the 22nd that he had introduced the "Gwangju Metropolitan City Courier Worker Support Ordinance" as the principal proposer on the 20th to help courier workers.

Industrial accidents in the courier industry have been increasing every year, from 135 cases in 2017 to 180 cases in 2019 over the past three years.

According to the ordinance proposed by Councilor Jang Jae-seong, Gwangju Metropolitan City must establish and implement a support plan every five years for systematic support of courier workers and conduct related surveys.

Unmanned parcel lockers can be installed and operated in the buildings of Gwangju Metropolitan City, its affiliated direct agencies and business offices, and other places necessary for the convenience of citizens.

Furthermore, the ordinance includes provisions allowing the mayor to carry out projects such as installing and improving facilities for the safety and health of courier workers, developing systems and policies to improve their working environment, and conducting education and publicity to promote their rights and interests.

Councilor Jang Jae-seong said, "By stipulating the necessary matters to support courier workers active in Gwangju Metropolitan City, this ordinance was proposed to enhance the convenience of living logistics services, alleviate the burden on courier workers, improve their working environment, and contribute to the balanced development of the local economy."

Meanwhile, the ordinance, which passed the standing committee, is scheduled to be finally approved at the plenary session on the 27th.
