"Urgent Need to Raise Social Distancing Levels... Stronger Quarantine Measures Must Be Taken"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] On the 22nd, the People Power Party criticized the government’s handling of the COVID-19 spread, stating, “While the government completely banned the anti-government rally in Gwanghwamun and called the organizers ‘murderers,’ it only imposed minimal controls, such as asking the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions’ nationwide rally to follow guidelines,” adding, “In effect, the government let go of control and poured fuel on the fire of COVID-19’s resurgence.”
People Power Party spokesperson Bae Jun-young said in a statement that “under the pretext of catching two rabbits?quarantine and economy?the government repeatedly signaled left but turned right,” and continued, “In February, the president declared the end of COVID-19; in April, some infectious disease-dedicated hospitals were partially closed; in June, plans for consumer coupons were finalized; in August, bans on church small gatherings were lifted; and in October, social distancing was eased to level 1. At every opportunity, the government disarmed the public’s vigilance toward quarantine.”
Spokesperson Bae pointed out, “The public is only confused,” and warned, “As the year-end and New Year holidays approach, with various small gatherings increasing in schools and workplaces, if the government’s inconsistent quarantine policies worsen the spread of COVID-19, the revitalization of the domestic economy cannot be guaranteed.”
Bae added, “The College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) is just around the corner. More than 60 confirmed COVID-19 positive students who were infected in the Noryangjin academy district were unable to take the middle school teacher certification exam held yesterday,” and emphasized, “The government has no time to hesitate about raising the alert level. It must promptly implement stronger and consistent quarantine measures along with raising social distancing levels.”
