[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] The cumulative number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the United States has surpassed 12 million. With daily cases approaching 200,000 and the spread intensifying rapidly, the number of COVID-19 patients increased by another 1 million in just six days.
According to foreign media including CNN, on the 21st (local time), the cumulative number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the U.S. exceeded 12 million. According to COVID-19 statistics from Johns Hopkins University, the cumulative confirmed cases in the U.S. were counted at 12,019,960 on that day. The cumulative death toll stood at 255,483. On that day alone, 195,500 new cases were reported, breaking the previous record once again. The daily confirmed cases in the U.S. are expected to soon exceed 200,000, as previously warned by U.S. health authorities.
In the U.S., after surpassing 11 million cumulative cases on the 15th, another 1 million cases were added in just six days, pushing the total beyond 12 million. At the current pace, it is expected that the total will reach 16 to 17 million by the end of the year. Even with the current figures, the number of COVID-19 infections in the U.S. accounts for about 20.8% of the global cumulative infections of 57.89 million.
As autumn arrived in October, the resurgence of COVID-19 in the U.S. has continued to worsen. On the 30th of last month, the cumulative cases in the U.S. surpassed 9 million, and ten days later on the 9th, it exceeded 10 million. Then, six days later on the 15th, it reached 11 million, setting a record for the shortest period in which 1 million new infections were added. This time, another 1 million cases were added again in just six days.
Since the first positive COVID-19 case was reported in the U.S. on January 20th, it took 98 days to surpass 1 million cases on April 28th. Since then, the rate of increase has been evaluated as exponentially accelerating.
