Green Light for Gangbuk Transversal Line and Western Light Rail Transit Projects Benefiting Seodaemun-gu

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seodaemun-gu (Mayor Moon Seok-jin) announced on the 19th that a green light has been given to the light rail projects ‘Gangbuk Transversal Line’ and ‘Seobu Line,’ which pass through the area, following the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s announcement of the ‘2nd Seoul Metropolitan City Urban Railway Network Establishment Plan.’

This announcement by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport was made about one year and four months after Seoul City applied for approval of the plan last July, undergoing consultations with specialized research institutions, related administrative agencies, review and adjustment by the National Transportation Working Committee, and deliberation by the National Transportation Committee.

Among the total of 10 lines announced this time, the Gangbuk Transversal Line (25.72 km), connecting Cheongnyangni Station and Mokdong Station, and the Seobu Line (15.77 km), connecting Saejeol Station and Seoul National University Station, are considered key projects in terms of balanced development between Gangnam and Gangbuk.

On the Gangbuk Transversal Line, among the total 19 stations, Hongje, Seodaemun-gu Office Front, Myongji University, and Gajaeul New Town stations will pass through Seodaemun-gu, while on the Seobu Line, among the total 16 stations, Myongji University, Yeonhui-dong, Yonsei University, and Sinchon stations will pass through Seodaemun-gu.

Myongji University Station (tentative name) will serve as a transfer station where both lines intersect.

Additionally, the Gangbuk Transversal Line is expected to connect with 13 lines including Line 3, Line 4, Line 6, Ui-Sinseol Line, and Gyeongui-Jungang Line, while the Seobu Line will connect with five lines including Line 2, Line 7, and Line 9.

Mayor Moon Seok-jin said, “Once the two lines passing through Seodaemun-gu are completed, transportation in areas that were previously subway blind spots will improve, and the quality of life for residents is expected to be enhanced.”

He also stated, “Since procedures such as preliminary feasibility studies remain even after this announcement by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, we will closely cooperate with Seoul City and related agencies to ensure that the demand for urban railway networks within the region is actively reflected.”
