Content Launched to View Seongbuk-gu Independence Movement at a Glance

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seongbuk-gu (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) and Seongbuk Cultural Center (Director Cho Tae-kwon) produced 'Independence Movement' content that organizes the independence activists and events active in Seongbuk at a glance, in commemoration of the National Patriots Day on November 17, as part of the Seongbuk-gu village documentation project, and released it on the Seongbuk Village Archive website.

The Seongbuk-gu village documentation project has been jointly promoted by Seongbuk-gu and Seongbuk Cultural Center since 2018. It is the first at the autonomous district level to open and operate the Seongbuk Village Archive website from January this year, where various records related to Seongbuk-gu's history, culture, and daily life can be easily found.

The Seongbuk Village Discovery + Independence Movement content released on the Seongbuk Village Archive website this time provides 176 events in chronological order, including 63 independence movements that occurred in the Seongbuk area during the Japanese colonial period. It also includes photos, maps, and more about the activities of 100 independence activists and 13 organizations in the Seongbuk area.

Optimized for mobile environments, this content allows users to check events by year, listen to audio related to the independence movement history and figures involved in each event, and verify independence-related records.

It is also designed to be shareable via SNS such as Facebook.

Seongbuk-gu is a region where the breath of independence activists remains everywhere, as it was home to Manhae Han Yong-un, resistance poet Yi Yuk-sa, Cho So-ang who drafted the Korean Declaration of Independence, heroes of the Battle of Cheongsanri such as Na Jung-so and Kim Kyu-sik of Noeun.

In 2017, through the 'Anti-Japanese Independence Activist Investigation and Excavation Research Service,' a total of 113 independence activists from Seongbuk-gu were identified. In addition to previously discovered independence honorees, 96 new activists including Choi Yong-deok, Na Jung-so, and Oh Se-deok were newly discovered, among whom 8 have been awarded by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs.

Lee Seung-ro, Mayor of Seongbuk-gu, said, “As part of the village documentation project, it is very meaningful to record the independence activists and events who sacrificed and devoted themselves for national independence in Seongbuk on November 17, National Patriots Day.” He added, “In the future, through the enactment of ordinances related to the collection and management of private records, private records collection contests, and the holding of Records Day events, we will collect traces of residents’ activities and daily lives that are easily lost over time, preserve them as valuable records, so that local residents can feel pride and play a leading role in the development of record culture in the era of local autonomy.”
