UNIST Has Six Researchers in the World's 'Top 1%'

Top 1% Globally Influential Researchers by Citation Count ... Second Most After Seoul National University
41 Selected from Domestic Universities and Research Institutes ... Based on 11 Years of Data Analysis Since 2009

UNIST Has Six Researchers in the World's 'Top 1%' UNIST Rodney Ruoff Department of Chemistry Distinguished Professor.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Who is the most influential researcher in the global scientific community?

Six faculty members from Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) were selected as ‘Top 1% Researchers Worldwide’ based on the number of citations of their papers.

The six researchers selected last year (Rodney Ruoff, Cho Jae-pil, Seok Sang-il, Kim Kwang-soo, Baek Jong-beom, Lee Hyun-wook) retained their honor this year as well.

Clarivate Analytics, an information analysis service company, officially announced the ‘2020 Highly Cited Researchers (HCR)’ list based on citation counts at 5 p.m. on the 18th.

Citation count refers to the number of times a paper is cited by fellow researchers. It is one of the criteria used to assess the ‘qualitative excellence of a paper.’

This year, a total of 46 researchers affiliated with Korean universities and research institutions were listed as HCRs, including duplicate selections. Excluding multiple fields and duplicates, 41 researchers were selected as HCRs, among whom 6 are affiliated with UNIST. This is the second highest number among domestic universities, following Seoul National University (8 researchers).

Rodney Ruoff, Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemistry, who was listed in two fields (Chemistry and Materials Science), has been a regular scholar selected as an HCR for seven consecutive years since the announcement began in 2014. Professor Ruoff was also included in the 2018 Nobel Prize predictor list selected by Clarivate Analytics.

Cho Jae-pil, Distinguished Professor in the Department of Energy Chemical Engineering, who has been selected in the Materials Science field for five consecutive years, is an expert in lithium-based secondary battery materials.

Recently, he has been accelerating the commercialization of secondary batteries. Professor Seok Sang-il of the Department of Energy Chemical Engineering, who has been selected as an HCR for three consecutive years, is a leading scholar in the field of perovskite solar cells and was listed in the Chemistry field for the first time this year.

Professor Seok was selected as an HCR in the Cross-field category in 2018 and 2019.

UNIST Has Six Researchers in the World's 'Top 1%' Seoksangil Suk, Distinguished Professor, Department of Energy Chemical Engineering, UNIST.

The Cross-field category was newly established in 2018 to recognize outstanding researchers who have significant influence across multiple fields even if their citation count in a single field does not reach the top 1%. Professors Kim Kwang-soo (Department of Chemistry) and Baek Jong-beom (Department of Energy Chemical Engineering) have been listed in the Cross-field category for three consecutive years.

Also, Professor Lee Hyun-wook of the Department of Energy Chemical Engineering, an expert in real-time transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in the battery field, was selected as an HCR in the Cross-field category for two consecutive years.

The 2020 HCR list is based on the citation counts of papers published over 11 years from January 2009 to December 2019. Clarivate selected a total of 6,167 researchers (including duplicate selections of the same individual) as 2020 HCRs across 21 academic fields and the Cross-field category this year.
