[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Samsung Engineering has secured a contract worth 150 billion KRW for the expansion of Doosan Solus's battery copper foil factory in Hungary.
On the 17th (local time), Samsung Engineering announced on the 18th that its Hungarian subsidiary signed a contract with Doosan Solus for the "Hungary Battery Copper Foil Plant Phase 2 Expansion Project." The contract is valued at approximately 150 billion KRW, with Samsung Engineering solely responsible for EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction), aiming for completion in 2022.
The project, located in the T?tab?nya Industrial Complex 50 km west of Budapest, Hungary's capital, involves expanding the existing operational plant by adding a battery copper foil plant with an annual capacity of 15,000 tons. This plant will produce copper foil, a key material for the anode of electric vehicle batteries.
Samsung Engineering previously carried out the construction of Doosan Solus's Hungary Phase 1 plant with an annual capacity of 10,000 tons. They explained that their experience in battery plant projects and the trust gained from the client during the Phase 1 plant construction led to winning the Phase 2 project. A Samsung Engineering official stated, "We have technology and know-how from executing numerous projects in the secondary battery sector," adding, "We will do our utmost to ensure the success of this project based on our differentiated technological competitiveness and local project execution capabilities in Hungary."
Samsung Engineering, which had planned a new order target of 10.5 trillion KRW for this year, has recently announced a series of contract wins including the 4.1 trillion KRW EPC for the Dos Bocas refinery plant in Mexico in Q4, the 780 billion KRW Samsung Biologics 'Edison 4' project, and the Doosan Solus Hungary battery copper foil plant expansion. Samsung Engineering intends to continue its selective order strategy focused on profitability, backed by a robust order backlog exceeding 16 trillion KRW.
