[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Hanwha Systems is set to develop the nation's first defense command and control intelligence service applying artificial intelligence (AI).
Hanwha Systems announced on the 13th that it has been selected as the preferred negotiation partner for the leading core technology project titled 'Intelligent Battlefield Recognition Service and Platform·Service Integration Technology.'
This project is the first development case applying AI, a future core technology, to military command systems. As a comprehensive task under the leading core technology program 'Development of Command and Control Intelligent Information Platform and Battlefield Recognition Intelligence Technology,' a budget of 15 billion KRW will be invested over four years.
Hanwha Systems will undertake roles including ▲development of intelligent battlefield recognition services ▲implementation of big data and AI platforms ▲simulation of battlefield situations and generation of simulation data, integrating these unit tasks.
With the rapidly changing security environment and future warfare patterns, the necessity for new weapon systems based on 4th Industrial Revolution technologies is becoming increasingly important. Especially, as troop reductions become visible due to a sharp population decline, the AI staff role that can quickly extract meaningful information from the rapidly increasing battlefield data is essential in future warfare.
The intelligent battlefield recognition service collects battlefield information and data in real time to build related knowledge, analyzes battlefield data using AI learning models applying machine learning and deep learning, and provides this to commanders. Commanders can recognize battlefield situations more quickly and accurately and make operational command decisions based on statistical and probability-based information analysis provided by the AI staff.
In the future, based on this intelligent battlefield recognition service, AI will be applied throughout the entire command decision-making process to analyze and propose suitable operations and strategies to commanders, completing an intelligent command decision support system that provides customized strategies according to unit size, commander rank, and operation type.
Kim Yeon-cheol, CEO of Hanwha Systems, stated, "We will successfully develop the AI staff by combining over 40 years of accumulated experience in command and control system development with artificial intelligence technology," adding, "We will lead smart defense by applying advanced 4th Industrial Revolution technologies to core capabilities in sensor and command, control, and communication fields, realizing the advancement of various weapon systems."
