[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] The Ministry of Science and ICT announced that it will hold the ‘2020 Korea-EU Joint R&D Conference’ online on the 12th to share the results of the 2nd Korea-European Union (EU) joint research project and discuss global ICT trends in the digital transformation era.
In the first session, presentations will be given on the overview of the ICT joint research project being promoted between the Institute for Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP) and the European Commission (EC) Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG-CONNECT), as well as the progress and key achievements of three joint research tasks in the fields of 5G mobile communications, cloud, and virtual/augmented reality (AR/VR).
In the keynote session, Professor Matti Latva-aho from the University of Oulu, the overall leader of Finland’s 6G Flagship, will deliver a presentation on ‘Prospects for Next-Generation 6G Communication Technology.’ LG Uplus will give an invited lecture on ‘Trends in Artificial Intelligence Services.’
The second session will introduce ICT policies of each country. Starting with the Ministry of Science and ICT’s presentation on the Digital New Deal, the core axis of Korea’s New Deal, the EU’s DG-CONNECT will present the EU’s smart network policy, and the Embassy of Spain in Korea will present Spain’s ICT policy.
In the final session, an online panel discussion between Korean and EU experts will discuss global trends in core digital New Deal areas such as data, artificial intelligence, and 5G network technologies, as well as future Korea-EU joint research topics.
The Ministry of Science and ICT and the EU are promoting joint research on core ICT technologies by jointly planning and investing equal-scale budgets to strengthen ICT cooperation. A total of 16 billion KRW has been invested over three years since June 2018.
Oh Sang-jin, Director of Information and Communications Industry Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, “We will continue to strengthen cooperation with European countries to secure core ICT technologies such as artificial intelligence and 5G convergence services and to promote the overseas expansion of domestic companies.”
