[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Construction of the extension of Incheon Subway Line 1 to Geomdan has begun.
On the 11th, Incheon City held a groundbreaking ceremony at the planned site of Station 101 in Geomdan New Town, Seo-gu, attended by Mayor Park Namchun, City Council Chairman Shin Eunho, National Assemblyman Shin Donggeun, and local residents.
The Geomdan extension of Incheon Subway Line 1 is a project to build a total of 6.825 km and 3 stations starting from the existing terminus, Gyeyang Station. The total project cost is 797.7 billion KRW, with the goal of opening in 2024.
The trains will consist of 8-car heavy electric trains connected as one set, with a total of 35 sets operating under a manned driving system. The operation interval is planned to be 4 minutes 30 seconds during rush hours and 8 minutes 30 seconds during off-peak hours.
Once the Geomdan extension of Incheon Urban Railway Line 1 opens, the subway's mode share will increase from the current 13.57% to 13.73%, dispersing vehicle traffic on the surface and effectively handling new traffic demand in Geomdan New Town.
Additionally, the city expects that strengthened connections with the Airport Railroad will solidify the urban railway network in northern Incheon.
