[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Hyewon] Seo Sangmok, chairman of the Korea National Council on Social Welfare, has been elected as the 21st president of the International Council on Social Welfare (ICSW).


The council announced on the 9th that Chairman Seo became the first Korean to serve as ICSW president at the general meeting held online on the 8th.


Chairman Seo earned a Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University in the United States and has served as deputy director of the Korea Development Institute (KDI), a member of the 13th, 14th, and 15th National Assembly, and Minister of Health and Welfare.


In his acceptance speech, Chairman Seo stated, “The COVID-19 pandemic has contracted the global economy and will further deepen social polarization. I believe ICSW’s role is to solve social problems in a society and world that are more unequal than before.”


He also presented the main tasks to be pursued as ▲strengthening the capacity of developing countries ▲expanding the ICSW agenda ▲improving the membership system.


ICSW, which provides advisory services to the United Nations, is a non-profit international organization established in 1928 to contribute to social justice and social development. Currently, 109 organizations from 65 countries participate in the council.
