Geumcheon-gu Opens Seoul's First Cafe Run by Out-of-School Youth

Geumcheon-gu Opens Seoul's First Cafe Run by Out-of-School Youth

[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) opened a cafe called ‘Daily Roasting,’ operated directly by out-of-school youth, on the 5th to support entrepreneurship among out-of-school youth.

‘Daily Roasting’ was planned as a resident participation budget project in 2020. Graduates of the alternative education institution ‘Wondo’ within the Geumcheon Youth Center and out-of-school youth took the lead in establishing a cooperative for independent cafe operation. After undergoing roasting training and entrepreneurship education, the cafe was born.

The cafe is located near the Doksan 3-dong Community Service Center (312 Doksan-ro). It utilizes a space prepared through the ‘Geumcheon-gu Doksan-ro Area Pedestrian Environment Improvement Project.’

The cafe’s name was chosen through a contest and means ‘freshly roasted coffee beans every day,’ hence the name ‘Daily Roasting.’

Going forward, the cafe will operate not only coffee and bean sales but also barista and roasting certification courses, internship programs, and serve as a hub education space to enhance youth’s field experience and expertise.

Meanwhile, the ‘Daily Roasting’ cafe is currently running a 1+1 Americano event for residents. All proceeds are used to support the independence of out-of-school youth.

Youth aspiring to become baristas will gain field experience at the cafe, which will operate as a hub education space to support their successful social entry and professional development.

Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, “The growth goal of Daily Roasting is to establish a foundation for the independence of out-of-school youth and help them grow healthily within the local community.” He added, “I hope this becomes a valuable experience marking the first step for out-of-school youth to grow together in the community and serves as a model case for creating social value.”

For more information, inquiries can be made to the Seoul Metropolitan Geumcheon Youth Center’s alternative education institution ‘Wondo.’
