Korea-ASEAN Carbon Dialogue Workshop... Considering Establishment of 'Korea-ASEAN Carbon Dialogue'

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Ministry of Foreign Affairs invited over 40 climate change experts from the 10 ASEAN member countries and held the 'Korea-ASEAN Carbon Dialogue' workshop via video conference on the morning of the 4th.

South Korea and the ASEAN member countries agreed to consider establishing the 'Korea-ASEAN Carbon Dialogue' to share policies and know-how related to carbon pricing and to promote mutual cooperation at the Korea-ASEAN Special Summit held in Busan in 2019.

In response to the global climate change crisis, as countries begin full implementation of the Paris Agreement from next year and declarations of carbon neutrality are expanding, South Korea and the ASEAN member countries shared experiences and trends related to carbon pricing systems currently implemented in Korea, ASEAN, and the European Union through this workshop, and held in-depth discussions on plans to promote greenhouse gas reduction cooperation projects.

Alistair Leitch, an emissions trading system expert from the Asia Society, compared the emissions trading system policies of Korea and the European Union, emphasizing that Korea, which has been leading the introduction and stable establishment of the emissions trading system in the Asian region, can serve as a model case for ASEAN member countries currently considering the introduction of carbon pricing systems.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs plans to finalize the Korea-ASEAN Carbon Dialogue promotion system and detailed implementation plans through additional consultations with ASEAN countries and to promote greenhouse gas reduction cooperation projects starting next year.
