[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-ju] It has been revealed that a public official in Gangwon Province received more than 20 million won in basic living benefits over about two years after taking parental leave.
According to a report by MBN News on the 2nd, Mr. A, a public official in Gangneung City, took leave starting from August 2018 due to childcare and received basic benefits of about 1 million won per month for approximately two years, totaling over 20 million won.
When Mr. A applied for basic living benefits claiming no income due to leave, Gangneung City accepted the application.
During this period, Mr. A moved residence twice and continued to receive basic benefits from the local governments to which he moved his address.
When the local government, suspicious of this, inquired with the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Ministry responded, "Public officials can apply for basic living benefits, but temporary income interruptions such as parental leave are not recognized as grounds for receiving benefits."
Gangneung City, which approved the benefits, stated that there was no problem with Mr. A's selection for basic living benefits at the time of approval.
It is reported that the public official lived abroad for a significant period during the leave.
