ECG App and Arrhythmia Alert Feature Approved by MFDS
Available from Apple Watch 4... Requires watchOS 7.1 Update
ECG Measurement Completed by Placing Finger on Digital Crown
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The Apple Watch's electrocardiogram (ECG) measurement and arrhythmia notification features are now available for use in South Korea.
On the 2nd, Apple announced that it received Class 2 medical device software approval from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety for the Apple Watch's ECG app and arrhythmia notification feature.
The ECG function can be used domestically on Apple Watch Series 4, 5, and 6 after updating to iOS 14.2 and watchOS 7.1. The arrhythmia notification feature is available on models from Apple Watch Series 3 onwards.
The ECG app and arrhythmia notification feature help detect signs of atrial fibrillation, the most common form of arrhythmia.
To record an ECG, open the ECG app on an Apple Watch Series 4 model and place your finger on the Digital Crown. After 30 seconds, the heart rhythm is classified as atrial fibrillation, normal rhythm, low or high heart rate, or inconclusive. The measurement record and classification information are saved in the iPhone Health app, and a PDF file containing the results can be shared with medical professionals.
The arrhythmia notification feature intermittently measures arrhythmia signals using the optical heart sensor and notifies the user if arrhythmia is detected in five tests over 65 minutes.
Symbol Desai, Apple’s Vice President of Health, said, "We are confident that these features will enable users to have meaningful conversations with healthcare professionals about their health," adding, "Through the ECG app and arrhythmia notification feature, customers will be able to better understand various aspects of their heart health in a more meaningful way."
