GS Caltex, First Refinery to Introduce Naver Pay Easy Payment at Gas Stations

[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] GS Caltex became the first oil company to introduce Naver Pay simple payment at gas stations on the 2nd. With this, GS Caltex has maximized customer payment convenience by adopting all of the top three simple payment services by subscriber base (Naver Pay, Kakao Pay, Payco) as well as Zero Pay.

Through this partnership with Naver, customers using GS Caltex gas stations can use Naver Pay simple payment at over 250 directly operated gas stations and more than 1,200 privately operated gas stations nationwide without physical cards or cash. The service is planned to be expanded to all gas stations nationwide by early next year.

When customers visiting GS Caltex gas stations generate a QR code on the Naver app and scan it at the payment terminal, the payment is made by deducting Naver Pay points. GS Caltex is running a promotion until the end of this year where customers making their first payment with Naver Pay will earn 5,000 Naver Pay points when paying over 30,000 KRW.

GS Caltex partnered with Naver to respond to the expanding simple payment market, which allows easy payment via mobile devices, and the rapidly changing payment technology trends. Through this partnership, GS Caltex aims to provide more convenient services to customers in the 'wallet-less' era, where people live with just a smartphone without a wallet, while Naver plans to establish precise customer marketing strategies by securing payment data.

Regarding this partnership, representatives from both companies said, "This is another fruit of the 'Digital Transformation Collaboration and New Business Opportunity Exploration Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)' signed in February between GS Caltex and Naver," and added, "Both companies plan to actively explore new business opportunities using online-to-offline (O2O) methods in the future."

Prior to this partnership with Naver, GS Caltex introduced Kakao Pay, Payco, and Zero Pay simple payments at over 250 directly operated gas stations nationwide in August. Additionally, since 2017, GS Caltex has been the first in the industry to assign unique digital IDs to vehicles and combine them with online payment services to introduce a connected car commerce solution, currently providing contactless fueling and payment services at over 330 GS Caltex gas stations.

Meanwhile, Naver Pay, the largest simple payment service in Korea, is starting an improved service this month by building its own payment infrastructure, moving beyond the previous method of providing offline payment services through linkage with other simple payment platforms. Including GS Caltex, offline simple payments can be made at about 70,000 affiliated stores nationwide such as convenience stores, large supermarkets, and coffee and beverage specialty shops.
