LG Electronics Toronto Artificial Intelligence Research Center conducted the 'AI Forum and Discovery Workshop' in an online video conference format for three days starting from the 28th of last month.
[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] LG Electronics held its first AI forum to discuss the development direction of artificial intelligence (AI) with talents from Canada, a leading AI nation.
LG Electronics' Toronto AI Research Center announced on the 1st that it conducted the ‘AI Forum and Discovery Workshop’ in the form of an online video conference for three days starting from the 28th of last month.
The event featured 16 AI experts from LG Electronics, the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, and the University of Toronto as presenters and panelists, including CTO (Chief Technology Officer) President Il-pyung Park. LG Electronics prepared the AI forum to advance AI through close collaboration with academia. Starting this year, it plans to hold the forum once a year going forward.
On the first day of the forum, the 28th, President Park Il-pyung and Dr. Elissa Strome from the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research delivered keynotes. President Park introduced LG Electronics' AI-centered digital transformation direction and shared the customer value they ultimately aim to achieve through AI technology.
Dr. Strome introduced the latest AI technologies in Canada and rapidly changing industry trends. She also explained major research fields where AI is applied, such as robotics and healthcare, emphasizing the need for greater cooperation between academia and industry to advance AI.
On the same day, the panel discussion included Rick Kreifeldt, head of LG Electronics North America Research Center; Kevin Ferreira, head of the Toronto AI Research Center; and University of Toronto professors Sanja Fidler and Steven Waslander, who discussed the future of AI and the roles of universities and companies.
On the 2nd and 3rd days, 10 researchers from LG Electronics and University of Toronto professors deeply shared their research areas, including AI optimization, conversational AI, deep reinforcement learning, and AI in healthcare. Sessions to discover future AI tasks also followed.
Previously, in 2018, LG Electronics opened the ‘Toronto AI Research Center,’ the first overseas research center dedicated solely to AI research. This center conducts AI research jointly with the University of Toronto, carrying out various industry-academic projects such as deep learning and reinforcement learning.
Additionally, the AI Research Center collaborated with Element AI, a company co-founded by world-renowned AI scholar Yoshua Bengio, to organize the ‘Stages of AI Development,’ which was unveiled earlier this year at CES 2020.
Park Il-pyung, CTO (President) of LG Electronics, said, “Starting this year, we will continuously operate the AI forum and work with academic experts to secure AI technologies that improve customers' quality of life,” adding, “We will nurture the AI forum to become a meaningful event that bridges the gap between industry and academia.”
