At Age 90... "My Name Is Bond, James Bond" Iconic Line Left Behind
Hollywood's Sexy Man Image
Supported Scottish Independence... Mentioned in 2014 "Could Have Moved Home from Bahamas"
[Asia Economy International Desk Reporter] The veteran actor Sean Connery, famous for the iconic line "My name is Bond, James Bond," has passed away, the British BBC reported on the 31st (local time).
BBC cited a statement from his son, Jason Connery, saying, "Connery quietly passed away in his sleep at his home in Nassau, Bahamas, last night." He had celebrated his 90th birthday last August.
Born in Scotland, UK, in 1930, Connery played the first James Bond in the 1962 film series 'Dr. No,' the beginning of the '007' franchise, and starred in six related films. Through this, he established the image of a "sexy man" in Hollywood.
According to BBC, Bond film producers Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said of Connery, "He amazed the world with his role as a secret agent who possessed not only determination and wit but also sexiness and charisma. There is no doubt that he contributed significantly to the success of the 007 series."
For his contributions to film, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II at the British Hollywood Palace in 2000. In 1989, he was also named the sexiest living man by People magazine.
Besides the 007 series, Connery appeared in several works such as 'Murder on the Orient Express' (1974), 'The Name of the Rose' (1986), 'The Untouchables' (1987), and 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade' (1989). In 2006, he officially announced his retirement while receiving a lifetime achievement award from the American Film Institute.
Outside of film, Connery showed a special interest in Scottish independence. In an interview ahead of the 2014 Scottish independence referendum, he said, "I have supported Scottish independence for a long time." He also added, "If the result leads to independence from the UK, I might move from my home in the Bahamas to Scotland."
Nicola Sturgeon, the first minister of Scotland, wrote on Twitter that day, "Today we mourn one of our most beloved sons."
