[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] The Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI), a barometer of maritime freight rates, has surpassed the 1500 mark, reaching its highest level in 10 years.

According to the shipping industry on the 30th, the SCFI, which indicates the freight rate levels on maritime transport routes, recorded 1529.99 on that day, rising 60.96 points compared to a week earlier. This is the highest figure since August 2010.

The SCFI, which announces new indices every Friday, has been setting weekly record highs for the past three months except for one occasion.

In particular, maritime freight rates on the US and European routes, mainly used by South Korean export companies, also showed an upward trend.

The freight rate for the US West Coast route was $3,849 per 1FEU (one 40-foot container). Although it slightly decreased compared to a week ago, it is nearly three times higher than the same day last year.

The European route freight rate also rose by $40 from last week to $1,140 per 1TEU (one 20-foot container).
