Seodaemun-gu Moraenae Market Area Transformed into Seoul-Style Alleyway

Improving Aging Infrastructure, Revitalizing Community, and Attracting Youth Startups Over 3 Years

Seodaemun-gu Moraenae Market Area Transformed into Seoul-Style Alleyway

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seodaemun-gu (Mayor Moon Seok-jin) announced on the 30th that the alleys around Namgajwa 1-dong Moraenae Market (Susaek-ro 2-gil) in the district have recently been selected as a target site for the 2020 Seoul-style Alleyway Regeneration Project.

This project is a small-scale, field-oriented regeneration project focusing on the ‘line’ unit, unlike the existing urban regeneration projects that regenerate target areas by ‘area’ units.

Seoul City selected this site by comprehensively evaluating the appropriateness of the project site and the autonomous district’s implementation capabilities through on-site inspections and expert reviews.

The area around Susaek-ro 2-gil is a preservation management zone where 95% of the buildings are aged structures over 30 years old.

Seodaemun-gu will invest 1 billion KRW in seed money supported by Seoul City for three years to improve aging infrastructure, introduce CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design), create smart pedestrian paths, and attract youth startups.

The district is also currently establishing a maintenance plan to promote a ‘Risk Building Maintenance-linked Urban Regeneration Project’ targeting the nearby Jawon Shopping Apartment (Safety Grade E), and plans to hold a related residents’ public hearing at 2 p.m. on November 11 at the Seodaemun-gu Social Economy Village Autonomy Center.

Mayor Moon Seok-jin of Seodaemun-gu stated, “We will ensure that this regeneration project not only improves the environment but also revitalizes the resident community to preserve the unique character of the alleyways.”
