[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Chun-hee] Suji Station on the Suseo High-Speed Railway (SRT) and Seoul Metropolitan Subway Line 1 in Pyeongtaek City, Gyeonggi Province, will be renamed Pyeongtaek Suji Station.

Hong Ki-won, a member of the National Assembly Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee from the Democratic Party of Korea (Pyeongtaek City Gap), announced on the 30th that he received a report from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport that the name of Suji Station was officially changed to Pyeongtaek Suji Station on the 8th following the review by the Station Name Deliberation Committee.

Although Suji Station is located in Pyeongtaek City, the station name alone did not indicate which city it was in, causing inconvenience to citizens. It also caused confusion and many inconveniences for railway users from other regions visiting Pyeongtaek City.

Furthermore, with various development projects such as large-scale housing development, private urban development projects, the creation of Godeok International New City, and the relocation of the Pyeongtaek Camp Humphreys U.S. military base, the environment around Suji Station has rapidly changed, highlighting the need to change the station name.

Accordingly, in 2015, the Pyeongtaek City Place Name Committee decided to change the station name to "Pyeongtaek Suji Station." After collecting opinions through a survey on the station name change conducted last December, a review was requested to the Korea National Railway in February. Through this process, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s Station Name Deliberation Committee recently finalized the change to "Pyeongtaek Suji Station."

Representative Hong said, "Going forward, Pyeongtaek Suji Station is expected to enhance its status as a key southern metropolitan railway hub where high-speed rail and public transportation transfers are possible through projects such as the construction of a complex transfer center and development of the Suji Station area," adding, "I hope it will be reborn as a station representing Pyeongtaek City."
