[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun expressed his view on the 29th regarding former President Lee Myung-bak’s 17-year prison sentence being finalized by the Supreme Court, stating, "This clearly proves why prosecutorial reform is necessary now."
On the same day, Prime Minister Chung posted on his Facebook, saying, "As the guilt of a former president has been confirmed by the Supreme Court, I feel a heavy heart as the Prime Minister," and emphasized, "It took 13 years for the simple truth that the law must be equal to everyone to be realized. This case would not have occurred if law enforcement had been fair in 2007."
This was aimed at the prosecution’s investigation in December 2007 into former President Lee, who was then a presidential primary candidate, regarding suspicions of being the actual owner of BBK and DAS, which ended with a no-charge conclusion. Former President Lee’s 17-year prison sentence was finalized by the Supreme Court on this day.
Prime Minister Chung wrote, "Injustice that goes unpunished will be repeated," and added, "I will accelerate reforms to ensure that such an unfortunate history never happens again."
